On December 1, 2014, the Bitcoin and gaming communities converged with the launch of BitQuest, the first Minecraft server integrated with Bitcoin. This innovative server introduced a novel concept where the in-game economy was directly linked to the real-world value of Bitcoin, creating an immersive experience that extended beyond the virtual realm.

BitQuest was created with the vision of incorporating the emerging technology of Bitcoin into the popular sandbox game, Minecraft. The server allowed players to earn Bitcoin by performing various in-game activities such as killing mobs, looting dungeons, and trading with other players. The in-game currency, emeralds, served as the medium of exchange, which could be traded for Bitcoin.

Players could accumulate emeralds through their adventures and contributions to the game world. These emeralds could then be exchanged for “bits,” a denomination of Bitcoin, which could be withdrawn to a player’s external Bitcoin wallet.

Over time, BitQuest evolved, becoming open-source and allowing other Minecraft server owners to implement the BitQuest plugin.
