Bitcoin was recognized by the Guinness World Records on October 18, 2022, as the "First Decentralized Cryptocurrency". This entry into the records highlights Bitcoin’s significance and the date it was launched, January 3, 2009. The record acknowledges Bitcoin’s significance as the first of its kind, solving the double-spending problem without the need for a centralized authority or trusted third party. The recognition came as part of the 2023 edition of the Guinness World Records.

The Guinness World Records entry for Bitcoin details the cryptocurrency’s development and the key features that make it unique, such as the Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism and the SHA-256 Cryptographic Hash algorithm used by miners. It also mentions the date of January 3, 2009, as the day Bitcoin’s network was launched, which is the correct date for when the first block, known as the genesis block, was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto.
