Badoo, which had more than 200 million global users at the time, became one of the early adopters of Bitcoin in the online dating industry. The decision to accept Bitcoin was driven by Badoo’s commitment to integrating new and novel technologies. The company saw Bitcoin as a cutting-edge technology that reflected its position as an early adopter.

The Bitcoin payment option was enabled through a partnership with Dutch online payment provider Smart2Pay. Users could use Bitcoin to activate different areas of the site and reveal people who had been looking at their Badoo profile.

The company reported that Bitcoin use was on par with other alternative payment methods. As a result, it considered how to incentivize more users to choose Bitcoin at checkout. At the time, Badoo offered more than 30 payment methods to its global customer base, processing transactions in 84 currencies.
