Dope becomes the first movie to accept Bitcoin for ticket sales
The indie comedy “Dope” became the first movie to accept Bitcoin as payment for ticket purchases. This innovative step was taken in June 2015, coinciding with the film’s themes of embracing modern technology and its implications.
“Dope,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, follows the story of Malcolm, a geeky teenager who is as passionate about '90s hip-hop as he is about modern-day tech. The film’s plot intricately weaves Bitcoin into its narrative, making the digital currency a central element of the storyline. In the movie, Malcolm and his friends turn to Bitcoin in a bid to quickly and quietly sell off an accidental drug stash.
Recognizing the synergy between the film’s content and the emerging digital currency, Open Road Films partnered with MovieTickets.com and the payment platform GoCoin to facilitate Bitcoin transactions. This allowed moviegoers to purchase tickets for “Dope” at over 900 theaters across the United States using Bitcoin.
The move by Open Road Films was a pioneering one, setting a precedent for other movies and industries to consider Bitcoin as a viable payment method.
