On April 22, 2014, Dorian Nakamoto, a man mistakenly identified by Newsweek as the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, expressed his gratitude to the Bitcoin community for their support during a tumultuous period in his life. In a video message, Dorian Nakamoto sat beside Andreas Antonopoulos, a prominent Bitcoin advocate who had organized a fundraising campaign on his behalf. The fundraiser was a response to the hardship Dorian faced following the Newsweek article’s publication.

Dorian Nakamoto, who had experienced both unemployment and health issues, was overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, which had donated approximately 47.6 bitcoins—valued at nearly $24,000 at the time. In his message, he thanked the 2,000 donors for their support, which came from all corners of the globe, including the US, Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. He expressed a desire to “hug” each person who had contributed.

Despite having no prior knowledge of Bitcoin until the Newsweek story broke, Dorian Nakamoto announced his intention to join the Bitcoin community and contribute in any way he could. His heartfelt thanks and the community’s response highlighted the compassionate and supportive nature of the Bitcoin community during a time when one of their own faced undue scrutiny and pressure.
