France adds Bitcoin into the national high school syllabus to teach trust and money
On October 31, 2019, France made a significant stride in the integration of bitcoin education by including Bitcoin in the high school syllabus. This inclusion was part of the Economics and Social Sciences curriculum, marking a progressive step towards introducing the concept of digital currencies to younger students.
The French Education Ministry provided an activity card for teachers, which was designed to explore the different properties of money through the lens of Bitcoin. The activity card was notable for its depth, going beyond basic questions like “What is Bitcoin?” or “How does Bitcoin work?” Instead, it delved into more complex economic questions regarding the role of this emerging currency.
The educational initiative included four videos that posed thought-provoking questions to the students:
- Can Bitcoin replace the Euro?
- Is Bitcoin the currency of the future?
- Is Bitcoin a currency like others?
- Do you have to trust your currency?
After watching these videos, students were expected to list the functions of the currencies discussed and apply them to Bitcoin. They were also encouraged to consider the concept of trust in relation to Bitcoin and the Euro.
