In the summer of 2015, LOT Polish Airlines, Poland’s national carrier, announced a groundbreaking initiative to accept Bitcoin for flight ticket purchases. The decision positioned LOT as one of the first major airlines in the world to adopt Bitcoin as a payment method, reflecting the company’s commitment to innovation and customer service.

The transactions were facilitated through a partnership with payment service providers, including Adyen and BitPay, which converted the Bitcoin payments into fiat currency. This allowed LOT to offer the convenience of digital currency payments without directly handling the cryptocurrency.

Jiri Marek, the Executive Director of Sales and Distribution at LOT, expressed that the move was a response to the evolving needs of their customers, many of whom were increasingly engaging in online shopping, including purchasing plane tickets. Marek foresaw that virtual currency payments would soon become as commonplace as credit card use.
