Real Bedford football club secure $4.5 Million in funding from Winklevoss twins to bring the "bitcoin club" to the premier league
On April 12, 2024, Real Bedford FC, a ninth-tier football club, received a significant investment of $4.5 million (approximately £3.6 million) from Winklevoss Capital, the investment firm owned by Bitcoin billionaires Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. This investment marked a notable event in the intersection of Bitcoin and sports.
The funds were allocated for several key developments, including the creation of a new training center, the launch of a football academy to nurture new talent, and the support of girls and youth football programs. Part of the investment was also used to establish a Bitcoin treasury for Real Bedford FC, aimed at securing the club’s long-term ambitions.
Following the investment, the Winklevoss twins became co-owners of the club, joining forces with podcaster Peter McCormack, who had previously bought the club in 2021 with the vision of taking it to the Premier League. The Winklevoss twins expressed their excitement about the investment, sharing in McCormack’s deep conviction in Bitcoin and its potential to propel Real Bedford FC’s journey to the Premier League.
At the time of the investment, Real Bedford FC was at the top of the Spartan South Midlands Football League Premier Division.
