Room 77 became the first brick and mortar business to accept Bitcoin

In the heart of Berlin’s vibrant Kreuzberg district, Room 77, a bar known for its forward-thinking approach, made history by accepting Bitcoin, a then relatively unknown digital currency. The owner, Joerg Platzer, was an early advocate of Bitcoin and saw the potential for it to revolutionize the financial system.

The first transaction using Bitcoin at Room 77 was for a pint of beer. At that time, the value of Bitcoin had just reached parity with the U.S. dollar, making it a novel and exciting form of payment for both the patron and the establishment.

Room 77 quickly became a hub for the Bitcoin community, attracting enthusiasts from around the world who were eager to experience the novelty of transacting in the digital currency. The establishment was fondly referred to as “the restaurant at the end of capitalism,” a nod to its pioneering spirit and the disruptive potential of Bitcoin.

Over the years, Room 77 continued to serve as a meeting place for the bitcoin community, hosting events and meetups that fostered discussions about the future of money.
