The Sacramento Kings made history by announcing that they would become the first major professional sports franchise to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. This move was facilitated through BitPay, one of the world’s largest payment processor for virtual currencies.

The decision was part of the Kings’ NBA 3.0 business philosophy, which emphasized investments in technology, globalization, and deep community partnerships. By adopting Bitcoin, the Kings aimed to create a more seamless experience for their fans, allowing them to make purchases for team merchandise and tickets without the need to physically reach into their wallets.

The integration of Bitcoin payments began in the Kings Team Store through a simple checkout process and was expected to extend to online transactions for team merchandise and tickets by March 1 of that year.
