Tesla, Block and Blockstream teamed up to mine bitcoin using solar power in Texas
On April 8, 2022, a significant collaboration was announced in the bitcoin mining industry: Tesla, Block (formerly known as Square), and Blockstream joined forces to create a Bitcoin mining facility powered entirely by solar energy in Texas.
This project was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable Bitcoin mining at scale and to address concerns about the environmental impact of bitcon mining.
The facility aimed to prove that Bitcoin mining could be powered by 100% renewable energy, specifically solar power. The project was a pilot, intended to serve as a proof of concept for larger-scale operations in the future.
Tesla provided a 3.8 megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) array and 12 megawatt-hour Megapack batteries to power the mining operation. A key aspect of the project was transparency; real-time operational and financial data from the mine, including energy consumption and hash rate, would be made publicly available through a dashboard.
The mining facility was designed to be completely off-grid, highlighting the potential for Bitcoin mining to fund the expansion of solar power and other renewable energy sources.
