In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015, the Bitcoin community quickly mobilized to provide aid to the victims. Various organizations and individuals within the community began accepting Bitcoin donations to support relief efforts.

The See Change Foundation, a Nepal-based charity, received over 100 Bitcoin donations within 36 hours of the earthquake, with contributions ranging from $1 to $100 per donation. These funds were allocated for immediate relief needs such as short-term housing, medical care, and essential supplies.

The BitGive Foundation also participated by accepting Bitcoin donations on behalf of Medic Mobile’s Nepal office, which used the funds for local relief efforts. The use of Bitcoin allowed for quick and cost-effective international donations, showcasing the cryptocurrency’s potential to aid in charitable activities. The Red Cross and Global Giving were among other organizations that provided significant aid, with the Red Cross committing an initial $300,000 and 19,000 non-food relief kits, while Global Giving raised approximately $570,000.

This event highlighted the Bitcoin community’s responsiveness and generosity in times of crisis, as well as the practical benefits of bitcoins in facilitating global humanitarian assistance.
