The first Bitcoin baby: a doctor who received Bitcoin for fertility treatment

Dr. C. Terence Lee, a fertility specialist based in Brea, California, announced a remarkable achievement: the birth of the world’s first “Bitcoin Baby.” This baby’s conception was made possible through fertility treatments that were paid for with Bitcoin.

Dr. Lee had been an early adopter of Bitcoin, intrigued by its potential to empower individuals financially. He began by offering a “male fertility evaluation” in exchange for Bitcoin on Reddit, which led to what may have been the world’s first Bitcoin-funded medical transaction. The patient who took up the offer was more interested in participating in the Bitcoin economy than in his sperm count, which turned out to be quite healthy.

Encouraged by this initial success, Dr. Lee offered discounts to patients willing to pay in Bitcoin. Despite some skepticism, a couple whom he had previously helped conceive three children accepted the offer. They paid for their fertility treatments in Bitcoin, leading to the birth of a healthy baby.
