The First Bitcoin Poker Tournament
The world’s first Bitcoin poker tournament was organized by an early Bitcointalk forum user, BitcoinFX, who also established the first Bitcoin to fiat exchange.
The buy-in for the tournament was set at 50 BTC, and the winner was awarded a prize of 1,000 BTC. At that time, Bitcoin was nearly worthless when measured in fiat currency terms. However, the early adopters saw immense potential in Bitcoin, and they used it to develop use cases and have fun.
Four players participated in the tournament, which took place at 3PM EST on March 20, 2010. The winner of the tournament was “dwdollar,” the creator of the first Bitcoin exchange. Theymos, a Bitcointalk and later r/bitcoin moderator, finished second.
After this inaugural Bitcoin poker game, follow-up tournaments were planned on the forum and IRC. This marked the beginning of the relationship between Bitcoin and poker.
