On September 14, 2012, the U.S. Secret Service executed the first warrant to seize Bitcoins. The case involved Michael Mancin Brown, who was implicated in the “Romney Taxes For Ransom” case.

The authorities targeted Brown’s Bitcoins as part of the investigation into his alleged attempt to extort a ransom from Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee. Brown claimed to have stolen tax documents from Romney and demanded a $1 million ransom in Bitcoin to prevent their release.
