On March 13, 2018, the Slovenian town of Kranj made history by unveiling the world’s first monument dedicated to Bitcoin, symbolizing the country’s embrace of the new technology.

The monument was strategically placed in a roundabout in the city center of Kranj, which is about 30 kilometers north of the capital, Ljubljana. The monument features a large Bitcoin “B” logo at its center, made from a horizontal seven-meter-wide weathering steel ring.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by notable figures including Kranj’s mayor Bostjan Trilar, Slovenia State Secretary Tadej Slapnik, and Bitcoin Association Slovenia president Jure Pirc. The construction of the monument was financed by blockchain technology companies, including the Luxembourg-based bitcoin-exchange Bitstamp.

The placement of the monument on a roundabout was chosen to represent decentralized connections, mirroring the decentralized nature of blockchain technology.
