Tiananmen Square ‘Tank Man’ Image Inscribed Onto The Bitcoin Blockchain
An anonymous individual uploaded the iconic “Tank Man” image from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests to the Bitcoin blockchain. This act was seen as a way to circumvent the Chinese government’s censorship of this historical event. The image and information related to the protests and massacre were thus downloaded to the computers of every person in China running Bitcoin software.
However, the intent behind this action was part of a protest against the centralization of Bitcoin mining power in China and the support that individuals like Jihan Wu, co-founder of mining company Bitmain, have given to a contentious plan to split Bitcoin in two.
