Twitter (X) enabled Bitcoin tipping feature

On September 23, 2021, Twitter introduced a feature that would further integrate Bitcoin into social media: Bitcoin lightning tipping. This feature allowed users to send and receive Bitcoin as tips directly through their Twitter profiles.

The launch of Bitcoin tipping on Twitter was a part of the platform’s broader effort to support content creators and to provide them with various avenues for monetization. Users could now connect third-party tipping services to their profiles, enabling them to link both Bitcoin addresses and Lightning Network addresses.

Twitter’s decision to incorporate Bitcoin tipping was influenced by the growing demand for financial transactions that transcend borders and the increasing recognition of Bitcoin’s potential as a global currency. The feature was initially available only on Twitter’s iOS apps, with plans to expand to Android and other platforms in the future.

The setup process was straightforward, allowing users to enable the tipping option right from their profile page. Once activated, a tip icon would appear on the profile, inviting other users to send money through various supported services, including Bitcoin wallets and the Lightning Network.

The introduction of Bitcoin tipping was not just a new feature; it was a statement by Twitter’s then-CEO, Jack Dorsey, who was a well-known proponent of Bitcoin.
